This private garden sits on a very large property, so envisioning connecting the house to accessible outdoor living spaces was key in designing a garden that would feel intimate, yet honor the great expanses of open area. The design also needed to incorporate mature trees and shrubs, which gives the garden a historical feel that is difficult to recreate. A seamless design was created by using low stone walls to terrace some parts of the property and rows of boxwood hedges. With great steps leading up to a grand lawn and gazebo, and adding privacy with large ornamental evergreens, a formal yet functional garden began to take shape.
It is clear that the owners feel at home with incorporating architectural elements in their garden. A beautiful iron sculpture accents the formal, rectangular pond, on the patio near the house. The pond also features floating, colored balls. The use of glass balls is repeated next to an intimate bench, with three glass balls mounted on rods at different levels creating an artistic atmosphere to the private area.
This client shows great confidence in exploring architectural details, both with ornamentation and plants, and the result is a garden that will continue to provoke the imagination of the visitor.
